Welcome to The Rambling Tarper. Unscripted. Unfiltered. 100% Tarper.
The multiverse madness continues, and honestly, the pacing is just getting better. Escaping the chaotic warlord-run Caltech of the premiere, the gang lands in a squeaky-clean, overly polite version of Pasadena. It looks perfect, but in classic sci-fi fashion, the utopia is a nightmare—everyone is kept in line by a repressive AI that shocks you via a neck microchip if you show even a hint of anger or negativity. It’s a hilarious and slightly terrifying shift in tone from the first episode!
Stuart, Bert, and Kripke are totally out of their depth trying to suppress their natural quirks. Of course, they fail miserably. Watching them get zapped every time they lose their temper—especially Kripke—is fantastic physical comedy. They eventually end up in a reeducation camp, complete with an orientation video hosted by none other than Christine Baranski (playing herself, not Beverly, which was a brilliant twist!). We also get a great emotional beat where Stuart manages to rescue Denise from her loveless marriage to this universe’s Gary.
But we need to talk about Zack. As the title of this post suggests, Zack is in this one! After a brief time-jump in the AI’s reeducation camp, the trio gets rescued by the resistance, led by Penny. And her loyal, dimwitted lieutenant is Brian Thomas Smith returning as Zack. Seeing him in this intense, high-stakes rebellion environment while still being classic Zack is absolute gold. It completely caught me off guard while perfectly tying back to the legacy of the original show.
Anyway, back to the episode—sorry for the tangent. A bad spin-off can completely ruin a good franchise, but the blend of the new storyline with all these legacy cameos (shoutout to Riki Lindhome as Ramona Nowitzki working as a receptionist!) is being handled so well. The chemistry remains top-notch, and watching Penny slap Kripke around to “deprogram” him is something I didn’t know I needed.
An absolute 5-star triumph! Reading… wait, watching this show continues to feel exactly like catching up with an old friend, just with the volume turned up to eleven.
